Lunching In Lobbies

The (haunted?) Langham, London

Updated: Jan 23, 2021

The Langham sits, very conveniently for me, at the top of Regent's Street. I pass it often on my daily walks around the capital so, as a result, I tend to 'frequent' its lobby bar.

The doorman is always very cordial and after hanging a left inside the lobby; Artesian, the lobby bar, is richly English but inviting and comfortable in all it's 'Englishness'. It practices a minimalist cocktail menu that has been inspired by a 'less is more' attitude but don't let that fool you, Artesian hasn't won the accolade of being one of the 50 "World's Best Bars" just because it's pretty. Nope! There's skill and service, without pretense, here.

Check out this video for a little taste of the atmosphere.

I don't sit at the bar all the time, mostly because I'm vertically challenged and the bar stools are ripe for me having a hilarious incident go down. Look, I'm already dressed down so if I'm going to raise eyebrows I'm going for tantalizing conversation, not the fact that I'm a klutz.

The table service certainly doesn't wane and views out the window remind you that you're in the greatest city in the world enjoying a level of service and an ambiance completely detached from the real hustle and bustle.

Like the amazing-ness that is London Pride (here in July 2019)

Ok, so I've never stayed here but I found out the place is supposedly haunted! How cool is that?

Apparently, The Langham has five regular ghosts. The hotel service level must be pretty high since their ghost count certainly is. I pulled these details from an internet search:

Room 333 is said to be the most haunted in the hotel. The ghosts include:

A German prince who committed suicide by jumping out of a fourth-floor window. He has been sighted walking through doors in the early morning, and is said to be the most active ghost in the building. He is very fond of Room 333. Look for a stocky man in a military jacket.

A honeymooning doctor who killed his wife before killing himself. This ghost was seen in Room 333. He's recognized by his blank eyes and Victorian dress.

The Emporer Napolean III. He lived at the Langham during his exile. He often hangs out in the basement.

A hallway-haunting man with a gaping wound on his face. There's also a butler who roams the halls.

A ghost who likes to toss guests out of their bed, especially in room 333.

A fluroescent ball of light which coaleses into human form

I think it's hilarious that Napolean hangs out in the basement!!

I think I'm going to have a drink before I check in and I think, at the very least, I'll avoid room 333.
