Hip, funky, fun, laid back, chic...W Punta Mita

Updated: Jan 23, 2021

I'm not sure what the coolest thing about W Punta Mita is but I do know there's a lot of cool things to choose from.

The first cool thing is Panchito; the mascot that sets the Mexican tone of the rest of the awesomeness that's yet to come. He greets you in the motor lobby and keeps you company while you wait for your ride down the jungle path to check in.

As soon as you arrive at the lobby there's no denying your feet are firmly planted in Mexico. Here you're suddenly surrounded by decor that spells out the cultural history of the area and the extraordinary artistry of the local indigenous Indians; the Huichol peoples.

It's so flippin' cool! From the metal screens that replicate the papel picado strung across streets in towns and villages all over Mexico, to the tile carpet in a beautiful Huichol pattern, that runs down the stairs and outside nearly all the way to the beach; these are just a few elements that showcase the magic of this part of the world.

While walking through the Living Room you'll pass beautiful pieces of art unique to this hotel. All special, all local and all really cool but not at all overdone. It's so NOT overdone that it's literally as comfortable as being at home...and gives the feeling of being so laid back that a coma is possible. I mean, it is vacation and you are at the beach so comas are possible but not at all necessary with all the awesomeness this hotel serves up.

It's no secret that the level of service in Mexico is amazing, but here it has an added element of the cool vibes the atmosphere provides. BONUS!! Sounds like a good reason to have a seat at the Living Room Bar...Cosmo time certainly didn't disappoint.

Heading outside to WET (which is what the pool area is called here) you find the music is great, the drinks flow well and the skill of relaxation is perfected easily.

Just steps from the pool is Chevycheria. A 1950s Chevrolet truck that's been converted into the epitome of a beach bar. I'm told the ceviche is excellent but since I'm not a seafood fan, I opted for the craft beer instead. The perfect chill spot, but this spot comes complete with a bartender.

How does it get better than this?

Here's how...the beach...take a peek at the video below...I swear, this is where Mexican beer commercials are born.

Dinner at Spice Market is a definite "not miss" situation. The menu serves up a fusion of Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian street food to die for. The waiter provided perfect recommendations and sitting in the dining room sets a mood that transports you to some exotic Asian locale. But, for the love of everything holy, get dessert! The coconut cake with salted caramel & pandam ice cream rendered me speechless...and trust me, that's no easy feat.

Hip and cool is probably the best way to describe the beach rooms here at W Punta Mita. There's several to choose from. I opted for the Wonderful Jungle Escape. In addition to the colorful decor, the floor to ceiling sliding door brings the outside in...and the outside is jungle. How awesome is that? The room comes complete with iPod dock for tunes, free wifi, a decent sized TV (I never turned on), a Nespresso machine and, my favorite...the W Mix Bar - it's full of all kinds of necessary items. I mean, really full of cool stuff...snacky and otherwise.

Whether you go to W Punta Mita and never leave the resort, or you explore the nearby surf towns, or hit up the night life in Puerto Vallarta; whatever you choose, you won't be disappointed with making the W choice.

P.S. All that funky decor? You can get your own to take home at the shop in Sayulita that decorated the hotel. (Revolucion del Sueno, 55 Calle Manuel Navarette, Sayulita open 10-8 daily)
